Name node is the master node of the cluster. It keeps the metadata of all files i.e. which block of file is stored on which location.
In hadoop 2.0 or cdh4 comes with new feature i.e. HA (High Availability) it offer several name node but obvious  one is active and other are passive. Now we can have 1 Active name node and n Pasive Namenode for Backup.

Name Node is one of the demons which runs on Master node of the Hadoop Cluster, it generally assigns task to slave node and keep the metadata information
