When a Hadoop job is run, it splits input files into chunks and assign each split to a mapper to process. This is called InputSplit.

InputSplit represents the data to be processed by an individual Mapper. Typically InputSplit presents a byte-oriented view of the input, and it is the responsibility of RecordReader to process and present a record-oriented view.

For Mapper input always key, value pair and inputsplit does this job to convert the inputformat file (Textinputfomat,SequenceFileformat) in to key value pair. No of input split === no of mappers.

An inputsplit is the slice of data to be processed by a single Mapper. It generally is of the block size which is stored on the datanode.
